Three-Alarm Fire
The night of June 30, 1997, members of the Holman family were fast asleep in their redbrick house in Hamden, Connecticut. Mr. Holman was in the master bedroom downstairs. Mrs. Holman and twelve-year-old Caitlin were in Caitlin’s room on the second floor. Meghan, seven, was in her bedroom across the hall.
Snowball, Meghan’s buff-colored teddy bear hamster, was in his metal cage under the window in her room. When Meghan first got Snowball, she put him in a habitat equipped with plastic tubes. But the fluffy hamster sometimes got stuck in the tubes and had to be rescued.
